A Yiddishe Mame

The first disk of the 3 disk set is called 'Yiddish Golden Hits'. So obviously, the first song is A Yiddishe Mame. This is the version as sung by the greatest cantor of all times, Yossele Rosenblatt.

Welcome Back

I just returned from a week in Israel. While there, I bought a three disk set named The Complete Yiddish Hits Collection. I hope to begin uploading one song at a time along with the lyrics. Stay posted.

Odessa Mama -

Translation

Whoever has not been
In the beautiful city of Odessa
Has not seen the world
And knows nothing of progress
Who cares for Vienna of Paris,
They're puddles, jokes, no comparison
Only in Odessa is
A Paradise, I say.

There in a restaurant
They serve you beer
And with it a bite
Of fresh skrumbli
Bashmala
and balik
And with them a shashlik
With a good glass of wine -
What could be better?

Oh, Mother Odessa,
You're forever dear to me.
Oh, Mother Odessa,
How I long for thee!
Oh, Mother Odessa,
Who can forget you?
Oh, Mother Odessa,
I see you no more.
Oh, Mother Odessa,
I long for you and vow:

Your avenues, promenades
Are light, beautiful.
The cafes, the boulevards,
One can never forget.
The carriages, the gypsies,
The tumult, ta-ra-ram,
The hotels, the young ladies
Still are on my mind.

Oh, Mother Odessa,
You're forever dear to me.
Oh, Mother Odessa,
How I long for thee!
Oh, Mother Odessa,
Who can forget you?
Oh, Mother Odessa,
I long for you and vow:

Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay,
One cannot forget.
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay,
How I should like to see you again!
Hop tidl dam ti stidl didl dam ti.....

Oh, Odess-Odessa Mother,
You are the most beautiful panorama;
Everyone treasured you dearly.
The cabarets, restaurants,
You will still remember today
Who knows what has become of you?
Odessa, Odessa, I long for you!

Der Alter Menashe

This is a beautiful song, which portrays the Jewish shtetl life, emphasizing the hardships of poverty, yet at the same time the great faith in the Creator, that he will provide what is necessary.
This is the first song I am posting, so please feel free to comment on anything and everything. The lyrics are written in Yiddish, and then the translation. If you feel there is an error in the translation, just leave me a comment.

Der Alter Menashe

Sat by the Gemara the old Menashe
And learned with enthusiasm
Comes his wife Zlata
And asks him a question
Where do we take for Shabbos?
There is no bread
Nu, whats the Chiddush
There is no Challah
No wine for Kiddush
Maybe its a reasoning
You should close the Gemara
And go somewhere and borrow
A few pennnies for tomorrow
Because from your enthusiastic learning
There won't be for Shabbos!

Continues to learn the old Menashe
What have you corrected - it's a difficut question
Because he wants to eat
And to eat is necessary
Hence, what shall one say
An answer on the morrow.

Replies his wife, Zlata
Menashe Menashe
You are a father!
We have two daughters already worth of blessing
And, very, thank G-d
An honor for the entire family
And you the great learned one have forgotten
That if there isn't for a dowry
They will, forbid, be stranded!

Continues to learn, Menashe,
Zlata, Zlata!
(It is written in Rashi)
A Jewish daughter need not ask any questions
She must thank and praise the Creator
That she has a husband, a Torah scholar
There isn't for today
There isn't for tomorrow
We have a great Creator
And he will provide

Welcome to the Yiddish Lyrics blog

Hi Readers,
For quite some time now I have been interested in Yiddish music. Yiddish has always been my mameh loshon, my mother tongue, and I still speak it on a regular basis. I have decided to start this blog to share some of the lyrics I have compiled over time. Although there are many sites that provide lyrics to Yiddish songs, I have oftentimes encountered difficulty in finding accurate lyrics to many songs I have come across. I will start posting some of the songs I already have, but if any of you readers would like lyrics to a specific song, please don't hesitate to ask. Enjoy!
